Investigation

Do male presenters change their speech when talking to people of different genders?

  • Compare a podcast of a male interviewing a female to another podcast of the same presenter speaking to a male.
  • Compare my rsults to  Tannens theory.
  • Collecting data on what language features they use with each gender
  • Do they change to advice vs understanding etc.
  • (For evaluation) Podcast may not be completely reliable because they're aware of recording and questions are planned before hand so not completely natural.

  1. Good data area. Will two interviews be enough? Evaluate the reliabliity of how far a single interview is likely to represent how that interviewer speaks to 'men' or 'women'. How long an interview? When terting Tannen's theory, what focus will you use? Which features of language willl you count as 'advice' or 'understanding' and is this likely to come up in interviews? Get some sample data to help you make decisions. You are right that it is not a 'natural speech' dialogue but, if you are testing interviews specifically, that doesn't matter. Think a bit more about reliabliity factors and address comparability.
